Emmet Sheehan Exits Start Early AfterLos Angeles Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan pitched just 1.1 innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday.
Sheehan had a rough outing Sunday despite getting through the first inning rather efficiently. The right-hander got two outs quickly in the first, and got a strikeout to end the inning after giving up a double to Wade Meckler.
In the second inning, though, Sheehan couldn’t keep the Angels off of the bases. After getting the first out of the inning, Sheehan allowed a single and two walks to load the bases. His walk against Angels third baseman Nick Madrigal took him 14 pitches, which was just one shy of his total for the entirety of the first inning.
The Angels capitalized with the bases loaded, as catcher Sebastian Rivero hit a single to plate two runners.
Manager Dave Roberts came out of the dugout following the single, and took Sheehan out of the game for Edgardo Henriquez. Henriquez managed to prevent any further damage in the inning.
Sheehan has made 12 starts for the Dodgers this season, which matches the most he has made in a season for LA.
He has a 4.70 ERA through 59.1 innings pitched, and has struck out 64 batters.
The 26-year-old came into Sunday’s game following a decent start against the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he pitched 6.1 innings and allowed just two runs on three hits. Sheehan has struggled with a few things this season—mainly his velocity—but has also struggled to keep the ball in the park.
Sheehan allowed two homers against the Diamondbacks, and has given up 11 of them on the season.
That matches the 11 he allowed in his rookie season in 2023, and he has pitched fewer innings this season.
Sheehan clearly has some work to do if he’s to remain in the Dodgers’ rotation, and will hope he can take another step forward in his next start.
That start is likely to come against the Chicago White Sox on the road next weekend.
