Electricity: Nigeria’s $500bn energy transition plan faces two challenges - Egoro raises alarm

An energy analyst and Executive Director of Energy Transition Africa, Vincent Egoro, has said that Nigeria’s ambitious $500 billion energy transition plan is facing two major challenges: inadequate skilled manpower and weak institutional capacity.

Egoro disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, warning that the country lacks the required workforce and institutional structures to deliver the planned $500 billion energy transition programme.

He said: “The country does not have the required workforce and institutions to deliver the planned $500 billion energy transition.”

The energy analyst also raised concerns about the future of Nigeria’s mini-grid initiatives, questioning their sustainability and the country’s capacity to expand electricity access through decentralised energy systems.

He warned that without adequate investment in human capital and institutional development, Nigeria could struggle to achieve its energy transition ambitions.

Egoro’s concerns come amid Nigeria’s persistent electricity supply challenges, with the country generating between 4,000 and 5,000 megawatts for a population of over 250 million people.

DAILY POST reports that Nigeria’s mini-grid capacity stood at 132 megawatt-peak, MWp, as of 2026.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has assured Nigerians of the Federal Government’s commitment to achieving energy security.

Recall that Tegbe had unveiled the Renewable Asset Management Company, RAMCO, to sustain gains in the mini-grid sector and strengthen the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.
