Elden Ring Movie’s Record-Breaking Budget Reportedly Confirmed As Amazon Joins Epic Fantasy Adaptation

The upcoming A24 movie, which was written and directed by Alex Garland (Civil War, Ex Machina), is an adaptation of the 2022 fantasy video game of the same name, which featured worldbuilding by Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin. While plot details of the Elden Ring movie are still under wraps, the movie is set to star Kit Connor (Heartstopper) opposite an ensemble cast that includes Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation), Sonoya Mizuno (House of the Dragon), Emma Laird (Mayor of Kingstown), Havana Rose Liu (Her Private Hell), and Ben Whishaw (Paddington).

Per Deadline, A24 is bringing Elden Ring to the American Film Market. They report that the project’s budget is between $175 and $200 million (leaning toward the upper bound of that range), which makes it the most expensive standalone project to be put up for sale at any film or television market in history. The movie, which is currently in post-production and is set to debut in theaters on March 3, 2028, has already had many of its international pay-1 streaming rights picked up by Amazon MGM Studios. This deal reportedly involved the studio spending tens of millions of dollars.

Pay-1 rights mean that Amazon MGM holds the rights to the video game movie when it first becomes available on subscription streaming in the selected territories, following its theatrical and premium video on demand window. While pay-1 rights can also include pay-per-view television, it seems likely that Amazon MGM will funnel Elden Ring to their proprietary streaming service, Prime Video, during the window outlined by the agreement.

A24 already has a pay-1 deal with HBO in the United States, so it’s possible that Elden Ring is already set for an HBO Max debut in the U.S. if it falls under the purview of the multi-year deal the two companies signed this January.

Ultimately, it makes sense why A24 would be bringing their project to market, even with a huge chunk of the international rights already accounted for. The movie is by far the most expensive project ever made by the independent studio. They fully financed the movie, which cost more than double the reported $60 to $70 million budget of their previous most expensive movie, 2025’s Marty Supreme.

Prior to Marty Supreme, A24’s most expensive movie was Alex Garland’s Civil War, which reportedly cost $$50 million.
