Eight year old Chinonso defeats 150 schools to win spelling bee

Legal and structural spelling parameters were pushed to the limit as the rounds progressed into advanced vocabularies, but the eight-year-old maintained absolute composure and precision under the judges’ spotlight.

The founder of the Joseph Onuorah Foundation, Chief Joseph Onuorah, stated that the 2026 edition recorded the highest volume of institutional participation since the competition’s inception.

He described Chinonso’s victory as a historic milestone for the foundation’s literacy tracking initiative.

Podiums, Cash Prizes, and Grassroots Educational Impact

Chinonso’s historic victory earned him the coveted grand prize of ₦200,000, sealing his place as one of the youngest champions in the history of the regional competition.

The podium was dominated by primary schools from Oko and surrounding hubs, with the second and third-place winners also clearing heavy lexical milestones.

School proprietors, teachers, and community heads present at the town hall praised the Joseph Onuorah Foundation for sustaining the annual academic investment without charging fees.

They noted that the competition has served as an effective catalyst for increasing healthy reading habits among primary school pupils, motivating hundreds of children across Anambra communities to devote more time to vocabulary development and self-improvement.
