New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel couldn’t contain his excitement at spring practice when watching second-year wide receiver Efton Chism III beat a defender in one-on-ones before hauling in a reception.
Vrabel could be heard talking up Chism from the sidelines with what sounded like a comparison to a previous Patriots wide receiver. After catching the pass and scoring in the red zone, Chism threw the ball up into the air for his touchdown celebration.
Patriots’ star cornerback Christian Gonzalez yelled, “You’ve got to get your own celly, Chis.”
Vrabel promptly responded, “Don’t be hating on Chis now, so I showed you his lineage. I showed you Chis’ lineage”
One has to wonder if Vrabel was referring to Patriots great Julian Edelman. Of course, the Patriots have had no shortage of solid slot receivers in the franchise’s history. Chism turning into the next Edelman would be a huge development for the team in a year where they’ve added A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs on the outside.
He showed flashes of talent during the season last year. His best game came against the New York Jets last December, when he caught two passes for 40 yards and the first touchdown of his NFL career. He would go on to finish the season with three catches for 75 yards and one touchdown.
