Dungeons & Dragons Officially Announces Major Change Ahead Of WoW Release

· · 3 min read

Dungeons & Dragons is taking a big leap with the impending release of Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, but that isn’t the only major change coming to the brand. Following plenty of internal changes in the last several years, parent company Wizards of the Coast will now be embracing new leadership.

That might feel like a concern for D&D fans, but if they’re reasonably happy with the way things are running right now, the shake-up won’t be bringing in anyone new. Instead, Hasbro (the parent company, in turn, of Wizards of the Coast) is actually pushing D&D‘s leadership into an even more significant position.

Today, Hasbro officially announced that Dan Ayoub will become the new President of Wizards of the Coast & Hasbro Games, with his tenure starting on November 2. After a “rigorous search that evaluated dozens of internal and external candidates,” Ayoub was selected as “the first internal candidate promoted into the role.”

Dan Ayoub has spent the past several years in leadership roles at D&D, and he was present throughout the transition as the former faces of the brand, Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford, departed the company following the release of the 2024 rulebooks. Before his time at D&D, he also worked in leadership roles at Microsoft, including a position as executive producer and studio head at 343 Industries.

In his official statement about accepting the role, Ayoub promises to “put fans first, respect the artists and creators who make these worlds come alive, and set an ambitious course for growth across tabletop and digital.” Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks also emphasizes Ayoub’s focus on working with creatives and satisfying fans, asserting that he “understands what our games mean to the people who play them and what it takes to build great teams and experiences.”

While Ayoub hasn’t laid forth any specific plans for the future of Wizards of the Coast, looking at the past couple of years for D&D could provide some insight into his prerogatives. The emphasis on working with creators has certainly been present, with the company broadening its horizons to incorporate more and more voices into new D&D material.

As for the “ambitious course for growth,” the easiest thing to point to is the new emphasis on crossovers, with D&D releasing World of Warcraft and Star Wars books in the near future. Wizards may also continue to push further into the digital realm, even if Larian Studios never returns to make a sequel to the smash hit Baldur’s Gate 3.

Wizards of the Coast’s Magic the Gathering embraced the collaboration-heavy strategy years ago, though, so it’s not exactly like Dungeons & Dragons was leading the charge there. Hopefully, iconic Wizards properties will still be able to maintain some of their core identity in the years to come with Ayoub at the helm. At any rate, fans can probably breathe a sigh of relief that the new president is someone with plenty of experience in a creative industry, whether they end up agreeing with all of his prerogatives or not.
