Dream star Allisha Gray calls out ‘trash’ referees during in-game interview

The Golden State Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream 88-83 on Saturday afternoon. It was an especially frustrating contest for Dream All-Star Allisha Gray who made just 5 of 17 field goal attempts in the game but finished with 22 points because she shot 16 free throws in the game, making 11. Anytime a player shoots 16 free throws, you know they took a beating and Gray has the video evidence.

During the second quarter Gray took a shot to the face from Valkyries’ forward Cecilia Zandalasini. Gray went down but got right back up and headed towards Zandalasini. Teammate Rhyne Howard cut her off and kept the situation from escalating, but Gray still ended up with a technical foul by the time the dust had settled.

Gray was interviewed between the third and fourth quarters on CBS and she let it slip how she really felt about the job the referees were doing in the game.

“You just gotta keep playing,” said Gray. “I mean, the refs are trash but hey, you keep moving on from that.”

It’s possible the referees heard her because she then shot eight free throws in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, as noted above, it just wasn’t enough. That’s been a common theme recently.

The Dream started the season 12-4 but have now lost five straight games which is the worst active losing streak in the league. If there’s something to be optimistic about it’s the fact that the Dream are not going to see the Valkyries again this season. Golden State has beaten them three times in the last 11 days in what will be their only three meetings of the season.
