Drake Maye tried to take blame, but his teammates refused to let him

SEATTLE, Washington — While it was clear that Wednesday night was not Drake Maye’s best performance, it’s clear that his teammates have no doubt regarding what he can do on that field.

They know he is the one who will continue to lead this team and play to the highest ability, all of which he showed last season as well as throughout the summer.

“Man, I told him we’re riding with him every day of the week and twice on Sunday,” Will Campbell told reporters after the game. “There’s nobody else anybody in this locker room would want pulling the trigger for us. We’re with him and we love him.

“We’ve always got his back.”

Rhamondre Stevenson had similar sentiments.

“It’s not on one person at all,” the running back explained. “This is a team game, we win together and we lose together. I wouldn’t pinpoint on one single person in that room. We all have to get better. Back to the drawing board like I said and figure it out.”

As did Morgan Moses.

“I got the utmost confidence in him. Just who he is as a person, as a football player, and what he brings to the table for this team. He is the definition of what we stand for as this team, and I know he’s going to bounce back. Obviously, you got to look at the tape and correct some things, and to be in a game where your last second drive and still have an oppounrtiy to win the game, an away game at that, it’s very key for us.

“So obviously, we did some great things out there, but there’s some things that we got to clean up and get back to the drawing board. So look forward to it.”

Romeo Doubs, who also struggled in the team’s season opener, also had kind words to say.

“I have the utmost confidence in him. I know what he can do. I’ve watched him and what he’s done in this league a long time, and, like I said, this doesn’t define him,” the receiver said. “It’s just this league, it’s always a pendulum in this league. For myself, I’ll just be better.”

But, as for Alijah Vera-Tucker, the newest addition to the Patriots‘ starting offensive line provided another take, explaining that while Maye will likely put the blame all on himself, everyone is just as much at fault.

“My confidence is always high in Drake. Those three interceptions come down to how he’s comfortable in the pocket. And I feel like, me as an individual and us as a whole, we can always be better,” he told Patriots Wire. “So, when the quarterback does that. Those three interceptions, it’s not just on the quarterback. Does he feel comfortable back there? Does he have time? What else is going on?

“I know Drake is going to be hard on himself because that’s what true competitors do. But at the end of the day, we love Drake, and we’re going to ride for him.”
