Donald Trump orders federal agencies to rename AI ‘Super Intelligence’

Artificial intelligence is getting a presidential rebrand.

Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday directing federal agencies to replace “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in official communications, websites, reports, and policy documents, wherever legally permitted. “The word super is the best word of all, and it’s the simplest,” Trump said earlier Tuesday at an event announcing America.gov, an AI-powered website meant to give Americans a simpler way to find federal information. “We don’t want to hear artificial.

It’s very powerful, it’s very brilliant,” Trump added. “It’s going to mostly be put to good use, and we’ll stop the bad use.” The order said that advances in AI warrant a new name.

It also says the executive branch “will not acknowledge the usage” of the old terms in applicable settings.

For now, the new label covers the same technologies as the existing federal definition of AI.

The executive order said that Trump’s science and technology advisor has 60 days to propose legislation establishing a federal definition of “Super Intelligence,” including potential changes to existing AI references in law.

Agencies won’t have to rewrite previously issued regulations, contracts, grants, or historical documents.

The announcement came a few days after a White House dinner with some of the biggest tech company CEOs and the leader of China, and a White House lunch with AI leaders on Tuesday.

Tech leaders such as Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei both spoke briefly and joined Trump in the announcement.

Meanwhile, Amodei reiterated his warning that AI must be pursued within safety parameters. “We all need to work together to make sure that we can win, and we can win safely if we do this right,” Amodei said. “If we work with the president and everyone here, we can win safely.”
