Philadelphia Phillies ace Cristopher Sanchez has been a completely different pitcher at home versus on the road this season, and that trend continued on Monday.
Sanchez got lit up by the lowly Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium, enduring his worst start of the year in the Phillies’ 15-1 defeat. The All-Star lefty lasted just 3 1/3 innings, surrendering nine runs on 12 hits and three home runs — all season-worsts for him.
Sanchez has now given up 18 runs and 27 hits over his last three road starts, raising his away ERA to 5.32 and WHIP to 1.52. By comparison, he has a sterling 0.86 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP at Citizens Bank Park this year.
After Monday’s game, Philadelphia interim manager Don Mattingly discussed Sanchez’s baffling home/road splits.

“We’ve seen the road, he doesn’t seem to be as sharp as at home,” Mattingly told NBC Sports during his postgame interview. “I don’t know if that necessarily has anything to do with it. Obviously, you don’t have the same mound you’re used to and all that stuff, but everybody pitches on the road. I don’t know how to really explain it, but obviously, as long as he’s healthy, he’s gonna be fine. Today’s hopefully one of those you don’t see very often.”
Sanchez’s home/road splits have been a trend throughout his whole career. He’s 25-9 with a 2.39 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP at Citizens Bank Park compared to 15-16 with a 4.17 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP everywhere else.
Many players perform better at home, so that’s not unusual. However, the disparity in Sanchez’s splits this year is particularly extreme and somewhat concerning.
Time will tell if they balance out as the season progresses, but that may not happen based on his career splits. He’ll look to bounce back at home against the New York Mets this weekend in his final start before the All-Star Break.
