Dolphins’ Achane not seen Tuesday, Hafley pleased with offseason overall; stock up, stock down

MIAMI GARDENS — Dolphins running back De’Von Achane, who has been at organized team activities and minicamp every day during the offseason workout program while rehabilitating from offseason shoulder surgery, wasn’t seen at OTAs Tuesday.

Also not seen at practice were guard Jamaree Salyer, who left practice on a cart last week but, according to Hafley, is OK, offensive tackle Carter Warren, edge rushers Cameron Goode and Robert Beal Jr., and cornerbacks Darrell Baker Jr. and Strom Duck.

Wide receivers Caleb Douglas and Tahj Washington were seen working on the side with a trainer.

It was the proverbial next-to-last day of school for the Dolphins’ offseason workout program with Tuesday’s organized team activities. Thursday is the final day of OTAs. After that, it’s a six-week break until training camp begins in late July.

Coach Jeff Hafley said he was pleased with the offseason workout program overall, both OTAs and the three-day mandatory minicamp.

“I like the way it went,” he said of the offseason.

However, Hafley, who was named head coach in January, said he’ll wait to evaluate how he did personally in his first offseason as a head coach.

Observations

–DT Zach Sieler didn’t participate in the first round off 11 on 11s Wednesday. Sieler has been limited in 11 on 11 drills since sustaining a minor ailment a couple of weeks ago.

–RT Austin Jackson was working with a trainer in the first round of 11 on 11s Wednesday. Jackson, who is recovering from offseason foot surgery, hasn’t done 7 on 7 or 11 on 11 drills the entire offseason but has done individual drills.

–There were no referees at Wednesday’s OTAs. Referees were present at all three days of minicamp

–Kicker Zane Gonzalez, the newcomer, was 4 for 4 on field goal attempts of 33, 41, 48 and 53 yards. Kicker Riley Patterson, the returnee, was good from 53 yards (I was taking attendance/searching for injured players during Patterson’s first three kicks). Both kickers have been solid during offseason workouts.

–LT Kadyn Proctor had some nice plays blocking DT Jordan Phillips in pass protection. Phillips came back on the next pass play with a nice move. It’s been a good back and forth. It’s important to remember players aren’t in pads and physicality isn’t being used very much.

–In the battle of first-team offense vs. first-team defense with 1:10 on the clock and the offense starting at its own 37-yard line, S Lonnie Johnson intercepted QB Malik Willis’ pass intended for TE Ben Sims near the 15-yard line. Sims appeared to be unaware the pass was coming and Johnsn jumped the route.

–In the battle of second-team offense vs. second-team defense with 1:10 on the clock starting at the offense’s 37-yard line, the defense held the offense to a long field goal attempt.

–LB Jordyn Brooks had a sack against Willis on a short pass. Brooks and LB Tyrel Dodson forced a blown blocking assignment by their pre-snap alignment.

–There was a pass breakup from CB Jason Marshall Jr. on the sideline. He caught Willis looking for RB Jaylen Wright on the sideline.

–Willis sent a pass to WR Malik Washington, who has shown potential so far in camp. Willis hit him on a corner route from the 50-yard line, getting Washington to about the 28-yard line.

–WR Tutu Atwell is emerging as QB Quinn Ewers’ go-to receiver, a role previously held by Theo Wease Jr.. Atwell and Ewers connected on their first snap of 7 on 7 together, and Ewers hit him again on the sidelines over CB Marco Wilson. The pair showed chemistry in last week’s minicamp as well. Their only hitch of the day in Tuesday’s OTAs was an overthrown ball with Atwell being double covered – likely just a throwaway from Ewers.

–QB Cam Miller had overthrown ball under pressure from LB Kyle Louis. This was more of a pattern in Tuesday’s OTA after seeing very little pressure through minicamp.

–Miller struggled again as WR AJ Henning came in to break up a medium ball, his first major play of the past week.

–DT Zeek Biggers and DE Chop Robinson pressured Willis leading to an incomplete pass intended for WR Jalen Tolbert. It was a solid look under pressure but a little underthrown.

Robinson, the 2024 first-round pick in 2024, had some good pass rushes against OTs Patrick Paul and Kion Smith although he didn’t get a sack. Still, Robinson, who Hafley wants to become a three-down player, had a good day vs. the pass and run.

Neither QB Malik Willis nor QB Quinn Ewers had a good day throwing the ball. Throws weren’t necessarily sharp, the pass rush was problematic and DBs did a nice job being disruptive. This might be more of a credit to the pass defense than a critical eye turned toward the pass offense.
