Dodgers call up top prospect to replace Shohei Ohtani

The MLB-leading Los Angeles Dodgers have called up their No. 1 overall prospect, Josue De Paula, to replace four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday.

De Paula, who will turn 21 when he makes his MLB debut Friday, was promoted from Double-A Tulsa and is expected to see playing time as the Dodgers’ designated hitter. The highly touted prospect enters the majors after an impressive season in the minors, batting .303/.401/.547 with 27 home runs and 152 hits over 123 games.

The Dodgers signed De Paula as part of their 2022 international signing class, and his rapid development has made him one of the most highly regarded young players in baseball. He is currently ranked sixth among all prospects in Major League Baseball.

De Paula has primarily played the corner outfield positions for Tulsa this season, splitting time between left and right field. He has recorded eight errors, but his offensive production has continued to make him one of the organization’s most exciting prospects.

There is also some roster work to be completed before his debut. De Paula is not currently on the Dodgers’ 40-man roster, meaning the club will need to make a corresponding move to create space for his contract by Friday.

Ohtani was placed on the injured list with right arm discomfort following Wednesday’s 14-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The superstar is not expected to return until at least Sept. 22, when the Dodgers begin a three-game home series against the San Diego Padres.

While losing Ohtani is a significant blow, Los Angeles remains in a strong position in the National League West. The Dodgers enter Friday with an 89-57 record and an 11-game division lead as they pursue their 13th division title in 14 years.

The Dodgers will begin a three-game series against the Miami Marlins on Friday, with De Paula potentially stepping into one of the biggest opportunities of his young career.
