Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman suffered a scary injury during Wednesday’s win against the Kansas City Royals. Spirits were high for the Dodgers in the top of the eighth inning as the team led 4-2, a lead they held on to. However, morale quickly faded.

Freeman attempted to catch a foul ball near the Royals dugout. While trying to find the railing to make the catch while tracking the ball, Freeman unfortunately fell hard into the dugout, tumbling across the steps.

Dodger Stadium held its breath, and at first it appeared Freeman would be okay as he got up on his own power and remained in the game after a brief conversation with trainers and manager Dave Roberts.

Unfortunately, the moment Freeman got back into the dugout it was clear his night was over. With his spot due up in the lineup, the Dodgers removed Freeman from the game and inserted Tommy Edman to pinch-hit in his place, ending his evening early.

After the game, Roberts provided an update on Freeman’s condition. He revealed that while Freeman has overall body soreness he will be listed as day to day moving forward, with his left shoulder taking most of the damage. “We dodged a bullet,” Roberts added, per Dodger Blue.

Freeman has not slowed down in his fifth season in Los Angeles. Across 118 appearances, the 36-year-old veteran has posted a .306 batting average, .380 on-base percentage, .852 OPS, 15 home runs and 57 RBIs.

Freeman could potentially return for Thursday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, but given how important he is to this club Los Angeles will continue to play it safe with one of the faces of the franchise.
