Chicago Sky guard/forward DiJonai Carrington has revealed the reason she posted ‘white privilege’ on social media after getting ejected against the Indiana Fever.
Carrington took to Threads to say white privilege and tag the Fever in her post after she was ejected for a rough foul on Cunningham at the end of the first quarter.
With media pundits and fans all sharing their interpretation of what Carrington was trying to convey with that post, the 28-year-old has come out and addressed it herself.
DiJonai Carrington blasts Emanuel Acho for misinterpreting her comment
After former NFL player and now analyst Emanuel Acho slammed Carrington for her use of the phrase after that foul, Carrington clarified the reasons behind her use of it after the Cunningham foul.
“I’ve never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption). Try exercising your critical thinking skills, I know you studied psych. Furthermore, I’m the last thing from ignorant or asinine when it comes to speaking on ‘white privilege,’ do ya research on that one.”
“I actually went to school, one of the top universities, might I add, to educate myself on this exact subject. I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon, knowing the historical and social weight it holds without having the proper evidence to substantiate it.”
Given the nature of the foul, it’s pretty indisputable that the outcome of issuing a Flagrant 2 to Carrington was the correct one. Even Carrington likely understands that, which is why she clarified that her comment was not referencing the foul or her ejection.
What it actually refers to remains unsaid, but it’s likely politically motivated, given recent comments from Cunningham and the public’s reaction to it.
Carrington and Cunningham will face off again towards the end of the month as the Sky and Fever face off on August 23, a matchup that Carrington has already said she’s looking forward to.
