The United States men’s national team came into Thursday’s World Cup group stage game against Turkiye with nothing to play for. USA had clinched a spot in the Round of 32 thanks to a pair of wins over Paraguay and Australia.
But still: Did they win on Thursday night? The answer is: No.
The United States was tied 2-2 with Turkiye as the clock ticked down in extra time in the second half thanks to goals from Auston Trusty and Sebastian Berhalter. But then? Disaster struck in extra time: Kaan Ayhan buried a loose ball to give Turkiye the last-second win.
Again, it didn’t matter as the United States had clinched a spot in the knockout rounds, which is why some starters rested and Christian Pulisic didn’t play until later. But there’s your answer!
That would be Bosnia and Herzegovina.
