The Detroit Tigers just pulled off something that sounds almost impossible, and according to OptaSTATS, it had not happened in Major League Baseball since 1897.
With their 11-0 win over the Seattle Mariners, the Tigers became just the second team in MLB history to record a 10-plus run shutout win in three consecutive series. The run started with a 14-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles, continued with an 11-0 victory over the Athletics, and now includes another 11-0 dismantling of the Mariners.
That is rare territory. In fact, OptaSTATS noted the only other team to do it was the Boston Beaneaters back in September of 1897. That means the Tigers just matched a feat that had been sitting untouched for 129 years.
What makes it even more impressive is the timing. Detroit has been dealing with all kinds of outside noise in recent days following the trade deadline, yet this team keeps playing with edge, confidence, and plenty of grit. If anything, the Tigers look even more energized.
This latest stretch also says a lot about how well Detroit is playing in every phase. The pitching has been dominant, the defense has held firm, and the lineup keeps delivering knockout blows. You do not post three separate 10-plus run shutouts in consecutive series by accident. That takes complete team baseball.
The Tigers are still chasing ground in both the American League Wild Card race and the AL Central, but this is the kind of run that can change the feel of a season in a hurry. History is history, but for Detroit, the bigger story is that this team suddenly looks like one nobody wants to face.
The gritty Tigs are making noise, and now they have a place in the record book to prove it.
