Denver Broncos fans left unhappy after owners purchase stake in Spanish soccer club

· · 2 min read

Denver Broncos owners Greg and Carrie Penner have reportedly made a minority investment in Valencia CF, a Spanish soccer league team.

This comes just a year after they became the largest minority owners of the Colorado Rockies baseball team. Valencia are currently second-to-last in the La Liga standings and in a dire financial situation.

The construction of their new stadium was paused for 16 years due to financial difficulties and only resumed last year after a financial package of $377 million was given to them.

The Penner Sports Group joined Pitchwise Holdings to acquire a 42% stake in the club at a valuation of $1.4 billion. According to the statement from Valencia, the new minority owners are set to invest approximately $112.4 million in the club.

While this is likely to help Valencia significantly, Broncos fans are not too pleased to hear the news.

Denver Broncos fans not pleased with new investment of Penner Sports Group

The Walton-Penner group took over the Broncos from the Pat Bowlen Trust in 2022 for a then-record $4.65 billion. Since then, they have invested in the Rockies and now the soccer club in Spain.

Their purchase of the Rockies was also heavily scrutinised as the Broncos are also planning on a new stadium, which is estimated to cost $4 billion.

“Whether it’s this facility [or] a new stadium, we’re trying to raise the expectations and our expectation is we want to win championships,” Greg Penner said. “We’re going to do everything it takes and provide the resources that are necessary to do it.”

However, after their recent investment, fans once again have raised doubts if the Broncos are the ownership’s only focus.

Denver Broncos fans left unhappy after

One fan said: “Good for them, now charging Bronco fans a royalty fee for their seats and inflating costs for season tickets by 400% makes so much more sense!”

While another added: “Cool! Millionaires getting more attention! Super fun for us hard working Americans that pay exorbitantly to attend games.”

“I hope it benefits the Broncos offense,” a hopeful Broncos fan stated.

Someone also wrote: “Broncos fans asked for an offensive weapon and got a Spanish soccer club.” And another opined: “Y’all skipped the part where billionaire portfolios operate completely differently than local fan expectations. this is actually so stressful for Valencia fans who have been dealing with terrible club ownership for years. why do billionaire groups keep buying historic teams just to treat them like portfolio assets.”

Meanwhile, the Broncos have started their season by winning four out of six games. They will be hoping to secure another win on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, which will help them stay in second place behind the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West.
