DC's Most Powerful Villain Of All Time Officially Returns To Mainstream Lore

Darkseid is no match for the villain who just returned to the DC Universe. Time and again, DC’s most famous villains have proved that they don’t need astronomical levels of power to torment their heroic enemies. The Joker is one of the most visibly frail antagonists in DC lore, yet his chaotic genius and unpredictable sadism keep Batman and the whole Bat-Family on their toes. The same concept applies to most of the Dark Knight’s rogues, who control entire criminal empires across Gotham City and beyond. In Metropolis, Lex Luthor relies on his brilliant mind, his advanced technology, and his nearly-unlimited resources to put Superman through unimaginable pain.

On the other side of the spectrum, DC’s mightiest villains must have their appearances strictly limited in order to keep their overwhelming strength from breaking the multiverse’s equilibrium. Destructive figures such as the Anti-Monitor, Perpetua, and the reality-warping Mr. Mxyzptlk are capable of wiping out entire timelines rather effortlessly. Leaving these threats active as regular, monthly antagonists would leave Earth’s protectors with absolutely zero logical chance of survival. So, when a threat like Darkseid arrives, the DC Universe’s most powerful heroes and villains get their chance to shine unbridled.

As powerful as Darkseid may be across the multiverse, however, he’s right to fear a very select number of characters.

Imperiex Returns As Darkseid Prepares To Conquer The DC Multiverse

Following his apparent defeat in DC K.O., Darkseid reveals his schemes in DC All-In Saga: Darkseid vs The World, where he confirms that his defeat in the King Omega tournament was a deliberate step in his plans. Instead of trying to conquer each individual timeline of the DC Universe only to inevitably fail when confronted by every world’s Superman, Darkseid is capturing each individual Superman and weaponizing the Absolute Universe’s hopelessness to collapse the entire DC multiverse into a singularity. In the meantime, Darkseid recruits Pandora and assigns her the role of Harbinger, but she secretly searches for everyone who “could be a threat” to him, starting with Imperiex.

As the living embodiment of cosmic entropy, Imperiex-Prime wields the power of the Big Bang itself and possesses the ability to absorb and manipulate universal amounts of energy, create black holes, and generate legions of planet-obliterating probes. Imperiex showcased his power during Our Worlds at War, where a single energy blast vaporized Doomsday down to his skeleton. He was only defeated when a sun-dipped Superman pushed the consciousnesses of both Imperiex and Brainiac fourteen billion years into the past and denonated them inside the Big Bang. Since Darkseid intends to reduce the DC multiverse into a Big Bang-like singularity, Imperiex seems like the only entity capable of stopping him.

Pandora’s apparent plan to resurrect Imperiex as a countermeasure against Darkseid creates an unsettling cosmic gamble, as she would be trading a multiverse-level threat with another villain of similar or even greater power. Sure, Darkseid’s attempt to lead the entire DC Universe to total collapse is top priority at the moment, and any successful strategy is equal to a miracle. But still, unleashing the living manifestation of entropy inevitably threatens the survival of every reality. Unlike Darkseid, Imperiex has no desire for conquest or worship, but instead seeks the obliteration of the cosmos so that a flawless new reality can be born from its ashes.

Darkseid’s main strength resides in his mastery of the Omega Effect, coupled with almost complete invulnerability and a ruthless mind with no capability for empathy. His main weakness lies in his reliance on mortal avatars and his vulnerability to specialized cosmic forces like the Source. Imperiex wears celestial armor that houses concentrated Big Bang energy capable of ripping open black holes and disintegrating entire solar systems. However, Imperiex lacks Darkseid’s cunning intellect and adaptable strategy, and instead relies almost entirely on overwhelming destructive output. If Imperiex stops Darkseid for good, a multi-timeline gathering of heroes and survivors could gather enough power to defeat Imperiex once again.

How do you think Darkseid will be stopped?
