Dave Roberts Adds Former Dodgers Manager to His All-Star Staff

Dave Roberts Adds Former Dodgers ManagerLos Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is helming the National League squad at the All-Star Game this July, and he’s picked his predecessor to help him.

Philadelphia Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly said Sunday that Roberts asked him to join the NL coaching staff, as reported by Paul Casella of MLB.com.

Don Mattingly confirmed that Dave Roberts asked him to be on the NL coaching staff for the All-Star Game. MLB hasn’t announced anything yet, though @BNightengale reports that Mattingly and Cardinals’ Oli Marmol will join Roberts’ staff.

“Any time you can be involved,” Mattingly said, “the All-Star Game obviously is an honor.”

Mattingly was the Dodgers’ manager from 2010 to 2015, when he and the team mutually agreed that he’d step down.

He was replaced by Roberts, who’s led the Boys in Blue to three World Series titles in his decade-plus at the helm.

Mattingly was never the manager of the All-Star squad when he was with the Dodgers, though he did serve on the coaching staff in his last season with the Boys in Blue.

As a player, though, he was well-versed in the Midsummer Classic. He was selected as an All-Star six times in his 14 seasons in the big leagues, all of which were spent with the New York Yankees.

With just over a month left until the All-Star Game on July 14, the picture is getting clearer, and a former general manager thinks there will be four Dodgers players on the roster.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic said he expects Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Andy Pages and Max Muncy to all make the squad.

Of those four, only Yamamoto isn’t expected to be a starter.

Ohtani, of course, is to be expected, but Muncy hasn’t been an All-Star in five years, and Pages has never gotten the honor.

The sluggers have 14 homers each on the season, and Pages leads Major League Baseball with 53 RBIs.

Do you think all four Dodgers will make the roster? And who’s being left out?
