If it seems like Sophie Cunningham is popping up everywhere, it’s because that’s exactly the case. After her appearance on The Late Late Show With James Corden following the World Cup, Cunningham’s next stop was at UFC 329, where she wasn’t just a guest in attendance; she wound up taking center stage as one of the ring girls.
Going even one step further, Max Holloway, who won the UFC 329 main event against Conor McGregor, also made sure to get a photo with Cunningham while recreating her viral pointing meme.
One of the big questions after Cunningham’s appearance as a ring girl at UFC 329 was how that all came about, and the president and CEO of UFC, Dana White, explained in a post-fight press conference. Apparently, this came together in the spur of the moment, as White was asked when Cunningham was brought on for the role.
“About eight minutes before she did it,” White said laughing. “I love Sophie Cunningham; we’ve created a relationship. And she was here tonight, and when she walked in, she goes ‘Oh, I want to walk around that,’ so I said, ‘Then you’re gonna walk around it.”
White obviously had no issues whatsoever with the Indiana Fever guard jumping into the Octagon to take on the role, and not surprisingly, Cunningham made plenty of headlines while doing so. It’s a cool story all around, but don’t be surprised if White gets approached by a few others in the future to jump into the role after seeing Cunningham get the job done.
