UConn announced Friday afternoon that men’s basketball head coach Dan Hurley has signed an extension through the 2031-32 season. News of the extension was first reported by Jon Rothstein of 247Sports. Per UConn, the extension was agreed upon under the existing terms of Hurley’s original six-year, $50 million contract, which was signed in 2024 and originally had four years remaining and was slated to end after the 2029-2030 season.
“Dan has proven to be the very best coach in men’s college basketball, and we’re thrilled to keep him home at UConn for the next six years. His teams embody everything that UConn is about; resilience, competitive excellence and the pursuit of championships. In this chaotic era of college sports, it has never been more important to maintain continuity as we strive to compete at the highest level in everything we do,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement.
Hurley has a 199-75 record entering his ninth season as head coach of the Huskies, won two national titles, and reached the Final Four in three of the last four seasons. Despite losing key player like Alex Karaban and Tarris Reed Jr. along with coaches Luke Murray and Tom Moore this offseason, Hurley has kept things churning along and has the Huskies as the No. 4 team in the country according to the preseason AP poll.
“It’s an incredible honor to coach the game I love at a place like the University of Connecticut and to be part of a community that means so much to me and my family. We understand our responsibility to the people of Connecticut and to the incredible supporters of UConn Basketball and will continue to bring a relentless, obsessive approach to winning and championship-level success. UConn is the Basketball Capital of the World, Bleed Blue,” Hurley said via a statement.
According to CT Insider’s Dave Borges, Hurley is set to earn $7.65 million in 2030-31 and $7.85 million in 2031-32. There is also a $1 million retention bonus that would push the base salaries to $8.65 million and $8.85 million in total.
Per Borges, Hurley’s buyout clauses have also been revised. In terms of leaving UConn for another college job, Hurley would now owe UConn $6 million if he left after this season. That would decrease to $4 million in 2027-28, $3 million in 2028-29, $2 million in 2029-30 and $1 million in 2030-31. If Hurley were to leave for an NBA gig after this season, the buyout would now be $4 million. That buyout decreases to $3 million in 2027-28, $2 million in 2028-29 and $1 million in 2029-30. He would not owe UConn any money if he decided to leave for an NBA job following the 2030-31 season.
