Damet urges St. Louis City to stay ‘humble and hungry’ amid historic run

St. Louis City SC head coach Yoann Damet has called on his side to remain “humble and hungry” amid their record-breaking run in MLS.

St. Louis held the Vancouver Whitecaps to a goalless draw on Wednesday, extending their unbeaten streak to a competition record-equalling 19 regular-season matches (level with FC Dallas in 2010).

Damet’s side have not lost in MLS since May 3, a 2-0 defeat to Austin FC, while they have also reached the US Open Cup final during this period.

Ahead of facing Minnesota United this weekend, Damet has urged his St. Louis team to remain focused, having already secured their place in the postseason.

“One of our objectives, which was to make the play-offs, has been done,” said Damet.

“But there are still five league games to play, and we want to go for more. The two words that we’ve been using, humble and hungry, are still very important to us.

“We have to stop limiting ourselves to what we think we can do. That was the first message on day one of the preseason, and I think this is a good proof of that.”

St. Louis are second in the Western Conference and just one point behind leaders Vancouver, despite a torrid start to the season.

They won just six points from their opening 10 matches, but St. Louis defender Timo Baumgartl is now targeting another club record.

“We started poorly this season. We see where we came from,” said Baumgartl.

“It’s about hunting 56 points because that’s the record of the club. We want to hunt that.”

Minnesota, meanwhile, have been held to back-to-back 2-2 draws in their last two MLS outings.

They failed to beat 10-man Colorado Rapids last time out, leaving them 13th in the West and seven points off the play-off spots.

St. Louis’ attack has been impressive during their unbeaten run, but defender Fallou Fall played a crucial role last time out against Vancouver.

Fall led his team-mates in interceptions (five) and clearances (seven), while also winning three of his five aerial duels.

Yeboah scored Minnesota’s first goal in their 2-2 draw with the Rapids on Wednesday.

He has now scored 16 goals in MLS this season, including eight in his last nine regular-season matches.

Along with their 19-match unbeaten run in MLS, St. Louis are also without defeat in their last 21 games across all competitions (W15 D6), the longest such run by an MLS club.

St. Louis also defeated Minnesota during this run, winning 4-2 at Energizer Park on September 12, with Rafael Navarro scoring a brace.

Minnesota are winless in their last eight MLS games (D3 L5), while they have also won the fewest points at home of any team in the West this season (13).

However, prior to their defeat to St. Louis last month, the Loons had won each of the previous four meetings between the two sides in all competitions.
