Miroslav Koubek has resigned from his position as Czechia’s head coach following their group-stage exit from the World Cup.
Koubek, who led Czechia back to the World Cup for the first time since 2006, saw his team finish bottom of Group A after failing to win any of their three matches.
Czechia were eliminated with just one point (W0 D1 L2), the second time they have collected fewer than two points in a World Cup group campaign.
Koubek cited “stupid mistakes” as the reason for Czechia’s early exit from the tournament, having closed out with a 3-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico.
The 74-year-old was criticised for his defensive approach to that loss at Mexico City Stadium, while also choosing to start striker Patrik Schick on the bench.
“A media campaign based on a number of half-truths and fabrications against me also contributed to my decision,” Koubek said in a statement.
“In this atmosphere, my work for the Czech national team would no longer make sense.”

Koubek was appointed as Ivan Hasek’s successor last December following a shock 2-1 defeat to the Faroe Islands in a World Cup qualifier.
He was able to lead Czechia to a second-placed finish in Group L, advancing to the play-offs, where they beat the Republic of Ireland and Denmark to reach the World Cup.
The former Viktoria Plzen boss only took charge of seven matches, winning two of those (D3 L2), averaging a win percentage of just 28.6%.
