Few 2026 anime have had as much hype as Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. The first season is regarded as one of Netflix’s best anime and is often ranked alongside the greatest sci-fi anime of all time. Part of the reason for Edgerunners’ overwhelmingly positive reception is just how brave it was. Far from a lighthearted anime about the importance of friendship, Edgerunners was a grim look at class disparity and the psychological burden of power.
Most importantly, season 1 of Edgerunners ended with much of the cast dead, leaving fans puzzled over how the series could possibly return for a season 2. The answer was that Edgerunners 2 would focus on a completely new cast.
What Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 About?

Edgerunners 2 stars four main characters. Roman, a young camera operator whose filming brings him into contact with the other three heroes. Weak Kingsley is a former Edgerunner legend whose brief brush with cyberpsychosis leaves him permanently downgraded with a lower cyber kit. D is a netrunner out for revenge after the murder of his clan. Lastly is Talia Yang, a young woman diagnosed with a degenerative disease, leading her to seek out increasingly extreme forms of cyberization as she tries to discard what little is already left of her failing body.
The intersection of these four characters leads to two main plots. The first focuses on D’s quest for revenge and his eventual meeting with the digital being Capricorn, an ultra-powerful AI capable of hacking pretty much everything. The second is about Talia running away from home, leading her mother, Avida, to enlist the help of Weak (her former lover) to bring the girl back.
How Does Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 End?

The series’ final episode sees Talia given full access to Capricorn. Upset with her corporate father after the death of her mother, Talia lets Capricorn take over her body, leading the unstable AI to essentially go on an Akira-esque rampage throughout Night City.
Eventually, the combined forces of D, Roman, and Weak are able to stop Talia, leading to D gaining access to Capricorn again. Knowing that the full forces of both the Arasaka and Kang Tao corporations are heading to D to destroy Capricorn, the duo use their combined might to go out in a blaze of glory.
Edgerunners 2 ends with Weak and Talia leaving Night City, Talia having mostly accepted her fate. Though Roman is heartbroken to lose his friends, he also has a new resolve to live life to the fullest in the hopes that he can see Talia once again, despite the grim prospect of her imminent death. There are also hints that Capricorn and possibly even D’s consciousness survived their encounter with the corporations, as the glint of a distant satellite suggests that the former may have uploaded themselves to the net.
How Is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Connected To The First Season?

Despite ostensibly being a sequel, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is mostly standalone, though some pretty blatant connections to the first season will be a treat for fans.
The biggest plot connection is through D’s quest for revenge. It’s eventually revealed that the Arasaka employee who ordered D’s clan massacred was already killed before the series began, and that he was specifically killed in season 1 when Maine went Cyberpsycho. As a result, D’s quest for revenge is ultimately revealed to be pointless.
The other connection is more thematic. It’s eventually revealed that D’s real name is David. This draws an interesting parallel between D and David Martinez from season 1. Both are flawed heroes who essentially transform themselves into living mechs in order to fight against agents of the corporations that ruined their lives. The primary difference is that while David was motivated by his makeshift family, D’s quest for revenge only alienated his two closest friends, Roman and Omi.
Beyond that, David is referenced a handful of times as one of the few residents of Night City who could handle Capricorn without immediately dying. This puts him in the same league as Talia and D, who also seem to have a higher tolerance for modification than most people. It also seems like David’s legend looms large over Night City, as most characters are aware of who he was and view his life as a cautionary tale.
Ultimately, fans hoping for a direct sequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 1 will almost certainly be disappointed. While the cameos and references are nice, those willing to take Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 as its own experience are more likely to enjoy the new season for what it is.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Streetwise kid David Martinez lives in the slums of Night City, becoming an “edgerunner” and taking on mercenary jobs outside of the system. While the original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners story came to its end, a standalone sequel series promises a fresh new animated angle on Mike Pondsmith’s unforgiving dystopic sci-fi universe.
