I’m not upset that the Chicago Cubs went out and made a blockbuster move for Alex Bregman in the offseason. Bregman was the best right-handed hitter available, and while things haven’t worked out early on, I’m still willing to bet on him figuring it out at a high level in Chicago. Bregman has been one of the better hitters in Major League Baseball.

The Cubs understood that they needed a right-handed bat and went out and got somebody who has proven that he can not only make an impact in a lineup, but be a great clubhouse guy as well.

Not all moves work out right away, but the Cubs really have no choice but to stick with him and hope he improves eventually.

Because of that, it sounds like the Cubs could be in the mix to move on from one of their young players, Matt Shaw, while some fans might think that’s not the right plan.

“With third baseman Alex Bregman signed to a long-term deal and second baseman Nico Hoerner locked in on an extension, Shaw is currently without a home on the diamond. He has served as a fill-in all over the infield and taken on outfield this year, too. The 24-year-old could possibly find a place as a corner outfielder with the Cubs after 2026, but other teams might see him as a great fit on the infield now.

“Chicago likes Shaw in his current versatile role, but if the teams wants to make a blockbuster pitching addition, expect teams to ask about his availability,” Jordan Bastian wrote.

If Shaw had been playing a bit better in Major League Baseball, it would be a lot easier to keep him.

However, because of some of the struggles he’s faced at the highest level, there’s really no reason for the Cubs to continue going down this path, as they just need to find a different player at a different position and continue on with this whole Bregman thing.
