Cubs announce roster decisions ahead of weekend series vs division rival

The Chicago Cubs are getting a familiar face back at the perfect time. The MLB club has activated former top prospect Matt Shaw from the 10-day injured list ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field.

The corresponding move is Kevin Alcantara being sent down to the minor leagues. Alcantara could return when the rosters expand in September.

Shaw has been sidelined since June 29 with a left-hand sprain, making this a nearly two-month absence for the 24-year-old. He recently began a Minor League rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa and went 4-for-10 with a double in three games before being activated.

The former first-round pick has dealt with multiple injuries this season, including a previous stint on the IL because of back tightness. Despite the setbacks, Shaw has remained an important part of Chicago’s long-term plans because of his versatility and offensive upside.

In 56 games with the Cubs this season, Shaw is hitting .246/.322/.415 with four home runs and four stolen bases.

The timing of Shaw’s return is significant.

Chicago is trying to solidify its position in the National League playoff race, and the Cubs are dealing with an important injury of their own. Shortstop Dansby Swanson has been on the injured list since Aug. 17 with a left oblique strain and is expected to miss at least several weeks.

Shaw’s versatility could become particularly valuable as the Cubs navigate the final month of the regular season. He has played multiple positions this year, including right field, center field and left field, and recently played shortstop during his rehab assignment — his first time at the position since 2024.

To make room for Shaw, the Cubs optioned outfielder Kevin Alcántara to Triple-A Iowa.

Now Shaw returns to a Cubs team that has postseason aspirations and a huge weekend series ahead.
