Crystal Palace have entered the race to sign Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell. The Eagles have initiated contact with the defender’s representatives as they look to strengthen their backline, but face stiff competition from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais, who are also tracking the highly rated Englishman. However, if Cresswell was to be on the move this summer, he prefers a return to England, making Palace the frontrunners for his signature. Palace’s move for the ‘excellent’ 23-year-old comes as the club braces for a formal approach from Chelsea for star centre-back Maxence Lacroix. Having already lost Marc Guehi to Manchester City in January, Palace are determined not to suffer another defensive departure without a replacement as manager Pierre Sage prepares for his debut season at Selhurst Park, having taken over from Oliver Glasner.
