Creature Commandos Season 2's Place In The DCU Timeline Confirmed By James Gunn

James Gunn offers a major announcement ahead of Creature Commandos season 2.

DC Studios co-CEO Gunn has provided another update on the DCU’s upcoming second installment of its animated series, Creature Commandos. While answering a fan’s question on Threads, he revealed whether Creature Commandos season 2 would be released before or after the highly anticipated Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow.

The second chapter of Creature Commandos is currently in development following the animated show’s debut in December 2024. Although an official premiere date has not been announced, Gunn has now offered a more solid update about when the series will premiere. According to him, Creature Commandos season 2 won’t make it to screens until after Man of Tomorrow‘s theatrical debut, which is scheduled for July 9, 2027.

While the co-CEO’s statement offers more clarity, it did not reveal the exact release date of Creature Commandos season 2. However, it can be speculated that it won’t be too far after Man of Tomorrow, as the creative team has consistently stated that the adult animated series is very far along in production.

Created and written by Gunn, Creature Commandos premiered on HBO Max on December 5, 2024. Its first season consisted of seven episodes and introduced audiences to Task Force M, a government-operated team of imprisoned monsters who are assembled to go on dangerous missions.

Man of Tomorrow will bring David Corenswet back as Clark Kent following his debut in 2025’s Superman. Gunn is returning to write and direct the upcoming superhero film, which will also feature Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. With the movie scheduled for next July, and Creature Commandos season 2 expected to premiere afterwards, viewers will unfortunately have to wait for quite some time for the return of the monstrous team.

DCU’s Creature Commandos is based on a team of the same name in DC Comics. They are a group of monster-like and robotic soldiers. Created by writer J. M. DeMatteis and artist Pat Broderick, the team debuted in Weird War Tales , published in November 1980. The original Creature Commandos consisted of Lieutenant Matthew Shrieve, Warren Griffith, Sergeant Vincent Velcoro, Private Elliot “Lucky” Taylor, and Dr. Myrna Rhodes.

There is no release date for DC Studio’s Creature Commandos season 2 at the time of this article’s publication. Season 1 can be streamed in full on HBO Max. Man of Tomorrow will premiere in theaters on July 9, 2027.
