A rumor circulated around league offices on Monday saying that young Boston Red Sox shortstop Marcelo Mayer had been traded. It did not take long for the Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow, to discredit those rumblings.

“I had somebody reach out to me and say, ‘Is it accurate to say you traded Marcelo [Mayer] to the Diamondbacks?'” Breslow told Alex Speier. “There’s some things that you see, and you’re like, ‘OK, that is not accurate, but I at least understand where it came from.’ And then there are things that are just blatantly false and don’t deserve a ton of attention, and this falls into that category.”

Boston was reportedly engaged in trade talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks throughout much of the offseason.

Arizona’s star second baseman Ketel Marte was heavily rumored to have been a Boston trade target. Marte, 32, is a switch hitter batting .246 this season with 11 home runs and 37 RBI.

Despite his massive star power, the Red Sox are fully out on dealing Mayer, who they view as one of the potential young tenants of their team.

This was the case over the offseason, and Breslow’s comments on Monday prove that this is the case now. Regardless of how you feel about Mayer or the Chief Baseball Officer, it is a good sign to know that the front office has plans for the future and that certain players are integral to those plans.
