Cowboys claim former Jets draft pick days after losing TE

The Dallas Cowboys have moved quickly to address their depth, signing tight end Zack Kuntz in the wake of a significant injury during training camp. The move comes after reserve tight end Princeton Fant suffered a season-ending torn ACL, forcing Dallas to add immediate depth at the position.

Kuntz arrives in Dallas as a developmental prospect with intriguing physical tools but limited production. Originally selected in the seventh-round of the 2023 NFL Draft by the Jets, the 6-foot-8 tight end lasted two seasons, playing in just two games in New York before being released on final cutdown day back in August of 2025.

Kuntz would sit out the entirety of the 2025 season before being signed to a futures contract with the Miami Dolphins two days before Super Bowl LX.

The Dolphins would release Kuntz back in early May before the Raiders signed him on July 31 where he would spend less than a week with the team before being placed on waivers.

For Dallas, this claim is less about immediate impact and more about depth and potential. The Cowboys already have an established starter in Jake Ferguson and a potentially rising contributor in Brevyn Spann-Ford.

Still, the timing of the move is notable. Training camp is often where fringe roster players make their case, and Kuntz now steps into an opportunity created by an unfortunate situation.

Ultimately, his addition reflects the Cowboys newfound proactive approach to roster management. Rather than waiting for the market to settle, Dallas identified a young, high-upside athlete and brought him in immediately.

Whether Kuntz, pronounced KOONTZ, can translate the opportunity into a lasting role remains to be seen.
