Concerning observation from Washington Commanders' minicamp

The NFL offseason is essentially over. After most teams wrapped up minicamps last week, the next stop on the NFL calendar is training camp. Training camp usually begins sometime in the third week of July. The Washington Commanders wrapped up their minicamp on Thursday.

It was a productive offseason for Washington. Of course, the other 31 NFL teams would say the same thing. General manager Adam Peters began overhauling the roster in March, with a special emphasis on the defense. Peters was aggressive in trying to land a wide receiver, too, making a serious play for Alec Pierce, who chose to stay with the Colts.

Peters also attempted to sign Romeo Doubs, but he signed with the Jets. Peters eventually brought back Dyami Brown after one season in Jacksonville and signed veteran Van Jefferson to a one-year deal. The Commanders also re-signed former Titans first-round pick Treylon Burks.

Throughout the offseason, Washington has been linked to 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk. Of course, Aiyuk is still with San Francisco. The Commanders have also been linked to four-time Pro Bowler Stefon Diggs.

Is Washington waiting on Aiyuk? That’s what almost everyone thinks. In minicamp last week, an observation from Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic did not paint a promising picture of the receivers.

The Commanders didn’t do much to placate any concerns about their pass catchers Tuesday. Quinn spread the team out across two fields for 11-on-11 drills to give the players who received fewer reps more time. But the results on both fields were … not great. Drop after drop after drop from the receivers and tight ends — all while Brandon Aiyuk continued to post subliminal messages on social media amid his feud with the 49ers.

This is not ideal. It’s worth noting that head coach Dan Quinn and his staff used last week to test out Washington’s depth across the roster. So, perhaps, some of those drops were by players who may not even make the Commanders’ 53-man roster. On the other hand, “drop after drop after drop” is not what you want to hear one month from training camp.

No one knows Washington’s true intentions. It’s possible that they don’t perceive wide receiver to be as significant a need as others believe. We’ll find out soon enough.

The good news is that the Commanders have plenty of money remaining ($43.7 million) to make a significant move.
