Commanders not interested in ex-1st-round pick facing felony charges

Since the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, most of the talk surrounding the Washington Commanders has been about their need at wide receiver. But you could argue that Washington had a bigger need: cornerback.

Last week, the Commanders made a move at cornerback, signing veteran Rasul Douglas. After signing Douglas, Washington now has Mike Sainristil, Amik Robertson, Trey Amos, Akhello Witherspoon, Antonio Hamilton Sr, Car’lin Vigers, Tre Hawkins III, Darius Rush and Fred Davis II at cornerback. Of this group, Sainristil, Robertson, Amos, Witherspoon and Douglas would appear to be the five with the best chance of making the 53-man roster.

Is that enough?

Remember, the Commanders have a new defensive scheme this year. They also have an improved pass rush. Therefore, Washington GM Adam Peters may believe that Douglas completes the Commanders’ cornerback room ahead of training camp.

Douglas is a solid, longtime NFL veteran. A nine-year pro, he has appeared in 135 NFL games, with 93 starts. He started a combined 28 games for the Bills and Dolphins over the last two seasons, respectively. However, the most notable free-agent cornerback available was Terrion Arnold.

Arnold, a 2024 first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions, was released on June 29. Now, why would an NFL team release a starting cornerback on a rookie contract one month before training camp? Arnold was arrested last month and charged with eight felony counts — four counts of armed robbery and four counts of kidnapping. If convicted, Arnold could face life in prison.

Instead of waiting for the legal process to play out, the Lions released Arnold.

That hasn’t stopped other NFL teams from showing interest in the former Alabama star. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Houston Texans recently worked out Arnold. Arnold’s agent revealed that four teams were interested in him, including the Texans. Washington wasn’t one of those teams.

Lynn said the Colts, Jets, Seahawks and Texans have reached out about signing Terrion Arnold.

Signing Arnold may not be considered risky because if he is convicted, the team that signs him can easily move on. But Detroit not wanting to let things play out speaks volumes.

Considering how Peters and head coach Dan Quinn have stressed culture, it’s not a surprise to see the Commanders not even consider the talented young cornerback.
