Commanders hope Drew Stevens ends long search for a kicker

The Washington Commanders have themselves a new kicker.

On Monday, the Commanders announced that Iowa rookie Drew Stevens won their kicking competition. Stevens beat out incumbent Washington kicker Jake Moody, who was released. Moody had come to Washington during the 2025 season after being signed off the Bears‘ practice squad. He also came to the Bears during the 2025 season, after starting with the 49ers, who then released him, the former Michigan Wolverine.

Washington and kickers are not much of an enjoyable topic to remember. Yes, in my teen years, the Redskins only had one kicker, and that was Mark Moseley. Moseley held on to the job much longer than any other Washington kicker in modern history, kicking for the Redskins from 1974-1986.

In recent history, you can’t discuss kickers without mentioning former HC Ron Rivera, who cut Dustin Hopkins following a lopsided home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. Rivera played the tough guy, cut Hopkins to get the team’s attention, but then chose to sign kicker Chris Blewitt, with no previous NFL experience, who had not kicked a field goal in a game in five seasons. Rivera was comical attempting to defend his move. Blewitt showed why no one else in the NFL had hired him: he went 2-for-5 in his two games and was quickly released.

Current Commanders GM Adam Peters has run into tough luck with kickers, making several moves in his three seasons. None, of course, were as irrational as Rivera’s signing of Blewitt; however, the Commanders have needed to sign several kickers because of injuries and a lack of success.

Here are the Commanders kickers in the last 20 NFL seasons. Do you remember all of these kickers?

  • 2025 Jake Moody, Matthew Wright, Matt Gay
  • 2024 Cade York, Austin Seibert, Greg Joseph, Zane Gonzalez
  • 2023 Joey Slye
  • 2022 Joey Slye, Tress Way
  • 2021 Dustin Hopkins, Chris Blewitt, Joey Slye, Brian Johnson, Tress Way
  • 2020 Dustin Hopkins
  • 2019 Dustin Hopkins
  • 2018 Dustin Hopkins
  • 2017 Dustin Hopkins, Nick Rose
  • 2016 Dustin Hopkins
  • 2015 Kai, Forbath, Dustin Hopkins
  • 2014 Kai Forbath

The Commanders hope Stevens will finally stop that revolving door.
