Now that training camp is into its second week, Adam Peters has hardly had time to catch his breath.
The Washington Commanders general manager has certainly been busy. The Commanders’ rookies and then veterans reported to training camp, but things don’t always go as we expect. The same is true for an NFL general manager. Injuries occur, another roster spot opens up, and he needs to have someone in mind so he can grab them before another team does.
Coaches and general managers must go through every day of training camp, hoping and praying they don’t have any injuries for that day. At the drop of a hat, suddenly the team general manager has to be on the phone, making a move. For instance, do any readers out there recall Philip Daniels? The very strong defensive end went down on the opening day of the 2008 training camp, and it was bad; Daniels was lost for the season. So Washington then went out and quickly traded with the Miami Dolphins for 34-year-old Jason Taylor.
Then there are older players, who sincerely intend to play one more season, but once they again get under the grind, the heat, they determine to retire. The most notorious of these sudden moves, those old enough will recall. It was July 1980, at training camp, RB John Riggins wanted to renegotiate his contract. The Redskins saw it differently; Riggins walked, sitting out the entire 1980 season.
Well, the Commanders had two abrupt retirements in this 2026 training camp in LB Nick Bellore and CB Ahkello Witherspoon. Also, guard Nate Herbig retired during the 2025 training camp. Suddenly, Peters had decisions to make.

Here are the transactions for the Commanders made already during this 2026 training camp:
- July 27: Nick Bellore retired
- July 27: Rasul Douglas signed as an unrestricted free agent
- July 29: Andre Carter II was released
- July 29: Matt Haack signed as an unrestricted free agent
- July 29: River Cracraft signed as an unrestricted free agent
- August 1: Trey Hill signed as a free agent
- August 2: Tre Hawkins III waived/ injured
- August 4: Ahkello Witherspoon retired
- August 4: Fabian Moreau signed as an unrestricted free agent
- August 5: Commanders announced they will sign Stefon Diggs to a one-year contract
And just think, we are only a little over a week into training camp. The preseason hasn’t even begun yet.
