Column: NASCAR Deserves Tons of Credit for Going Full Distance at Quaker State 400

There are times when NASCAR deserves criticism, and there are times when it deserves credit.

Sunday night at EchoPark Speedway unquestionably falls into the latter category.

After severe weather delayed the Quaker State 400 for hours, NASCAR faced a difficult decision. It could have waited just long enough to reach the halfway point, declared the race official and sent everyone home. Instead, race control, track officials and the industry made a commitment to the competitors and the fans: race the full 400 miles.

As this story is being written, the field is preparing to restart with 61 laps remaining in Stage 3. The clock reads 12:55 a.m., and NASCAR is still determined to give fans the complete event they paid to see.

That’s exactly the right decision by NASCAR, Elton Sawyer, John Probst and the entire crew.

In an era where it’s easy to take the quickest path, NASCAR chose the harder one. Officials monitored a dangerous weather forecast throughout the evening, worked tirelessly to dry the racing surface whenever conditions allowed and remained patient until they could safely resume competition.

The result has been a complete race instead of an abbreviated one.

Credit also belongs to the thousands of fans who refused to leave. Those who remained through hours of delays were rewarded with what every race fan wants to see — a full-distance NASCAR Cup Series race decided on the track, not by the weather.

Those fans deserve a standing ovation. They braved the uncertainty, stayed in the grandstands late into the night and created an atmosphere that still felt energetic well past midnight.

The competitors deserve credit as well. Teams adapted to changing conditions, worked through an unusually long delay and returned ready to race at full speed despite the late hour.

Most importantly, NASCAR deserves recognition for putting the integrity of the event first.

The easiest decision would have been to settle for an official race after halfway. Instead, officials showed patience, trusted the process and gave the drivers every opportunity to complete all 400 miles.

Moments like this build credibility. Fans appreciate when the sanctioning body exhausts every reasonable option to complete a race as scheduled, and Sunday night served as an excellent example.

Sometimes the best decision isn’t the easiest one.

NASCAR proved that at EchoPark Speedway.
