Colts WR Keenan Allen formally charged with 2 misdemeanors stemming from August DUI arrest

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Keenan Allen has been formally charged with two misdemeanors following his August arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Allen was formally charged with “operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent (ACE) of 0.15 or more,” which is a Class A misdemeanor and carries a possible jail sentence of up to one year and a fine up to $5,000. He was also charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor that carries a possible jail sentence of up to 60 days and a fine up to $500.

The 34-year-old Allen was arrested in downtown Indianapolis on Aug. 30 at approximately 1 a.m. after stopping his car in a no-parking area. According to a court filing, he had “extremely slurred speech and glossy eyes,” and a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage” was picked up on his breath.

Allen’s blood alcohol content was registered at .224, nearly three times the legal limit of .08, and he performed poorly during multiple field sobriety tests, according to the California Post. He was arrested and booked into Marion County Jail before being released later that day.

Days after Allen’s arrest, Colts general manager Chris Ballard did not comment on the matter, saying only, “[G]ood people make mistakes. And he’s a tremendous human being. Give him some grace.”

Ballard added that any team discipline would be dealt with internally.

First-time alcohol-related offenses typically result in a three-game suspension, but the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement states players can face stiffer penalties if the charges are related to “aggravating circumstances” including “extreme intoxication,” which the league defines as having an ACE of 0.15 or higher.

Allen signed a one-year contract with the Colts on Aug. 19 that could be worth up to $8.32 million. He caught six passes for 32 yards during Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
