Colts urged to make 'big trade' for wide receiver help in training camp

With question marks at the wide receiver position, ESPN’s Seth Walder believes that the Indianapolis Colts should trade for a former second-round draft pick.

Walder recently proposed five “big trades” that he believes should be made during training camp. One of which involved the Colts acquiring Keon Coleman from the Buffalo Bills. In return, Indianapolis would trade away a 2027 fourth-round pick, while also receiving a 2028 sixth-round pick in return.

“Buffalo doesn’t have to trade him,” Walder wrote, “but between his on-field struggles and the negative vibes stemming from ownership’s comments, it certainly could. And the Colts would be a logical candidate to bet on Coleman at a reduced cost.”

Over his first two seasons, Coleman has 128 total targets and has caught 72 of those passes for 1,028 yards with nine touchdowns.

“Coleman has recorded 1.65 yards per route run over 583 career routes, along with a 48-51-49 triple-slash of open, catch and YAC scores from ESPN’s player-tracking based receiver scores,” Walder wrote. “Those numbers aren’t great and aren’t what the Bills hoped for when they drafted him, but they’re not terrible either. He definitely could still be a contributing player to a winning team with some growth.”

Beyond Alec Pierce and Josh Downs, the Colts’ wide receiver depth chart is a fairly big question mark. Not only does Indianapolis need to determine who WR3 is, but the fourth, fifth, and sixth spots on the depth chart still to shake out as well.

Competing for those starting snaps are Laquon Treadwell, Ashton Dulin, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine. After five training camp practices, ESPN’s Stephen Holder said, “There are very much still a lot of questions” at this position.

The Colts don’t need someone to step in and replace Michael Pittman‘s production on their own, but as good as Pierce and Downs are, they become easier to defend if the defense isn’t concerned about the other wideout on the field.
