Colts place former Ravens undrafted defensive back on retired list

Former Ravens undrafted free agent Reuben Lowery‘s NFL path has taken an unexpected turn.

The colts/338" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Indianapolis Colts placed Lowery on the Reserve/Retired list after claiming the versatile defensive back off waivers from Baltimore last season. Lowery, a Powder Springs, Georgia, native, appeared in three games with one start for the Ravens and recorded five tackles after making the initial 53-man roster out of training camp.

Lowery was one of Baltimore’s more surprising roster stories last offseason. He signed with the Ravens after going undrafted in 2025 out of Tennessee-Chattanooga, where he built a reputation as a productive, versatile defensive back with ball skills, toughness, and special teams value. He and Keyon Martin entered camp as long shots, but both made the roster because of their ability to handle multiple responsibilities and create splash plays, moves that helped push Beau Brade and Jalyn Armor-Davis off the initial 53-man roster.

Lowery’s stay in Baltimore ended after the Ravens reshaped the back end of the defense. Baltimore waived him after signing C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the practice squad and trading for safety Alohi Gilman, but Lowery was not unemployed long. The AFC South-leading Colts claimed him off waivers, adding a young defensive back with college production and early NFL experience.

At Tennessee-Chattanooga, the 5-foot-9, 204-pound Lowery appeared in 46 games with 29 starts from 2020-24. He totaled 166 tackles, including 109 solo stops, 19 tackles for loss, two sacks, 15 passes defensed, three interceptions, two interception returns for touchdowns, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.

Lowery also earned four Academic All-SoCon honors from 2021-24. As a senior, he was named first-team All-SoCon after starting 11 games and producing 62 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, six passes defensed, and two interceptions.

For Baltimore, Lowery’s brief run remains a reminder of how valuable versatility can be at the bottom of a roster. He made the Ravens as a do-it-all defensive back and even started at safety, but his time with the Colts ended when he was placed on the retired list.
