Colby Covington has shared his honest opinion on the Justin Gaethje gloves controversy, courtesy of Ilia Topuria.
With President Donald Trump watching, Gaethje delivered a performance that will join the great underdog stories in sports history. Beating a previously undefeated killer, Ilia Topuria. A much younger man, with real knockout pedigree, who had just knocked out two men back-to-back who had already finished Gaethje. But that didn’t prevent ‘The Highlight’ from showing out on US soil. A truly remarkable display, or was it? While nobody can take anything away from Gaethje regarding his ability to weather the storm and outperform Topuria on the night, some image-damaging allegations have surfaced against the UFC lightweight champion.
According to Ilia Topuria, there was something strange about Justin Gaethje’s gloves. After announcing his interest in a rematch, Topuria hinted that Gaethje had tampered with his gloves.
The comments got the world talking. And the latest to join in on the conversation is Colby Covington, who said:
“You know, I’ve seen the conspiracy theories, and I’ve seen, like, the pictures. It definitely looked like there was something in his glove. Like, I don’t know what to say. It looked off-color. It didn’t look like the taping of your hands, you know, how all the UFC fighters get their hands wrapped. It looked like an off-color yellow. It didn’t look like white tape. So, I don’t know. Maybe he’s on to something. Maybe he knows something we don’t know. I don’t know.”
Despite also believing something to be off with Justin Gaethje’s gloves, Covington claimed he doesn’t like speculation. So instead of agreeing with the rumors, Covington gave Gaethje his flowers.
“I don’t like to speculate on things,” Covington continued. “You know, Ilia lost the fight fair and square. Justin got his hand raised. It was one of the greatest underdog stories in American history, and you know, I’d like to see that fight again.”
