Coen with injury update on Jaguars Brian Thomas after exiting joint practice

During the Jacksonville Jaguars’ joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. exited early on. However, that decision seemed precautionary.

According to John Shipley, the injury occurred when Trevor Lawrence connected with Thomas on a downfield pass on the first play of 11-on-11 work. From the sounds of it, Thomas came down hard on the ground during the play, impacting his shoulder.

After being looked at by trainers, Shipley said that Thomas went back in for one play before exiting the practice.

“I think he’s alright, just fell on his shoulder,” Liam Coen said after practice. “Holding him out was smart. Get him ready for Cleveland.”

With Coen mentioning that the Jaguars will get Thomas ready for the team’s Week 1 game in Cleveland, we may not see him during Wednesday’s second joint practice with Tampa Bay.

Thomas has put together a strong performance throughout training camp. His rapport with Lawrence has improved this offseason, specifically on deep balls, where he could see his fair share of targets this season.

That said, Thomas also has the ability to impact other levels of the field as well with his speed and route running. Beyond being able to generate explosive plays, the attention he draws from opposing defenses can help open up opportunities for others in the Jaguars’ offense.
