Clemson Gets Back on Track, But Ugly Start Still Looms Over Tigers

Clemson finally got into the win column Saturday night, but one victory may not be enough to erase the concerns surrounding Dabo Swinney and the Tigers.

After opening the season with a disastrous 51-10 loss to LSU, Clemson needed a strong response in its home opener against Georgia Southern. The Tigers delivered the win, but the bigger question remains: Was this a true turnaround or simply a necessary win against an inferior opponent?

The LSU loss was not just an ordinary defeat. It was the worst loss of Swinney’s Clemson tenure and immediately created questions about the direction of the program. LSU dominated Clemson physically, piling up 644 yards while the Tigers struggled to establish any consistency on offense or defense.

That made Saturday’s game extremely important. Clemson could not afford another shaky performance against Georgia Southern, especially at home.

The Tigers now have their first win of the season, giving the team at least some breathing room. But the schedule is about to get much more interesting.

Clemson faces North Carolina next, followed by a trip to California and then a massive matchup against Miami. Those games will provide a much better indication of whether the Tigers have actually fixed the problems exposed against LSU.

The biggest concern is that Clemson entered the season with legitimate expectations but immediately looked nothing like a championship contender in Baton Rouge. Swinney has already faced questions about roster construction and his approach to the transfer portal and NIL era.

So while Clemson can celebrate getting its first win, the season is far from fixed.

The Tigers survived Week 2. Now comes the real test.
