Clayface’s Blink-And-You’ll-Miss Cameo Officially Explained By Director

WARNING: This article includes spoilers from Clayface.James Gunn’s DC Universe has expanded once more, while also taking a trip down the horror genre.

As the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” continues to progress, 2026 has brought one of Batman’s most famous villains to life, as Matt Hagen has made his live-action debut, with Tom Rhys Harries bringing the iconic shape-shifter to the big screen. However, with his solo film now playing in theaters, some audience members may have caught a very familiar star in a fast cameo.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clayface director James Watkins officially broke his silence on Aaron Paul’s cameo in the DCU installment, confirming that it was indeed the Breaking Bad star who showed up very briefly in the R-rated feature during the big nightclub scene, as Harries’ character briefly shapeshifted into the Jesse Pinkman actor. The actor was cast as Matt’s abusive father through flashbacks, but in the end, his role was reduced to a brief appearance.

But for the final cut of the Clayface movie, Watkins explained that Paul “has a real brief Easter egg kind of moment.” The British filmmaker elaborated, “In terms of trying to figure out the character, it was, How much is Matt defined by his past and how much is he an everyman? At one point, we were looking at it and thinking, Is it the ‘sins of the father’?”

He continued, “But actually, as we worked on the script, I thought that notion of revenge was more universal and more relatable to all of us. It doesn’t matter whether you’re carrying a trauma or any of that. If we’re slighted, we carry this sense of being wronged and we all want to do something, but generally in life we can’t do anything about it and we’re powerless.” Watkins stressed that “with Matt, it’s not that he’s a bad guy trying to be good. He’s a decent guy, but then like all people, we all have primal impulses within us that can be dangerous, whether that’s impulses for love, whether that’s impulses for retribution.”

As they took that approach, they wanted to use Matt’s father as a haunting ghost, with Watkins explaining what it represents to Harries’ leader character, adding, “He’s probably also saying, ‘No, I’m not my father.'” Prior to the film’s release, Paul had been heavily rumored to appear in Clayface, as FeatureFirst had reported his casting back in June, but it wasn’t known that he had been cast as the abusive dad.

Following his Clayface movie cameo, the latest entry in Gunn’s continuity has emerged to a strong critical reception, as it is holding 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, while sitting on 94% on the Popcornmeter. From a critics’ score, it’s the second-highest-rated project for the DCU, while it has the highest audience score out of all the films in the franchise.

In ScreenRant’s Clayface review by Graeme Guttmann, he rated it 7/10, sharing how “when Matt eventually crosses the line to true villainy, it’s backed up by a solid, visually engrossing story that has its weak spots, but proves to be more of a good time than it has any right to be.” He also added, “Too often in Clayface, Matt flirts with disaster, echoing the film’s own trajectory. But it wouldn’t achieve what it does if it didn’t get so close to the line before slithering its way over it.”
