New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez knows the challenge that awaits the defensive unit in Sunday’s AFC East divisional matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
Allen is a perennial MVP-caliber player who currently has 786 passing yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions, along with six touchdowns on the ground. The Bills offense has been rolling as an entire unit. They are ranked fourth in the NFL with an average of 401.7 yards per game and first in the league with 33.7 points per game.
Stopping that unit was already going to be a daunting task, but the Patriots will have to do it without Gonzalez and defensive tackle Christian Barmore, who have both been ruled out with shoulder injuries.
“It’s definitely hard. It’s definitely a challenge. He’s MVP for a reason,” Gonzalez told Patriots Wire’s Jordy McElroy, before the injury news. “He can make a play out of nothing. A lot of times on film, you see it looks like he’s about to get sacked, and he steps up or he’s being sacked and still throws the ball, and it’s in a good place. So, I mean, it’s just continuous hustle to the ball and swarm. We’ve got to swarm him as a defense.”
Not only do the Patriots have to swarm Allen, but they will also have to swarm running back James Cook as well. The combination of Cook and Allen has been deadly on offense, and the Patriots will have to depend on many of their backup options to step up and make plays.
A win on Sunday could drastically change the perception surrounding the Patriots this season.
