After an explosive second season, Prime Video’s Chris Pratt-led action thriller The Terminal List continues to make waves with impressive ratings and news that the series will continue in the form of an adaptation of Jack Carr‘s third novel, Savage Son. This news may not come as a surprise to longtime fans who saw the potential of the streaming drama from the beginning, but it’s certainly a welcome development. That said, there are still questions about how Savage Son will play out — not necessarily in terms of page-to-screen translation, but in terms of format.
‘Savage Son’ Is Officially Being Adapted by Prime Video
As initially reported by Deadline, it’s unclear whether Savage Son will be a standalone series or billed as The Terminal List Season 3. The second season, based on the book True Believer, sets up several plot threads that James Reece will be forced to unravel in a continuation of the story — whether it be the truth about his father, Tom Reece (David Keeley) or the whereabouts and next moves of Oliver Grey (Jeremy Bobb). The show’s prequel, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, also leaves the story of Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch) wide open leading up to his inevitable betrayal.
In Collider’s interview with showrunner David DiGilio, he generally referred to adapting Savage Son as a third season. That said, he also added that the novel is an “incredibly contained story,” and teased that “there’s a big story coming, knock on wood, with Season 3 and Savage Son.”
It seems most likely, given how the franchise has operated thus far, that Savage Son will simply be a subtitle for the third season of The Terminal List. That’s certainly the simplest, most accessible way to handle it, and would ensure that fans don’t miss James Reece’s next chapter after Season 2. Making Savage Son the official third season of The Terminal List also allows the main story thread to continue through an already successful show. It also opens the door for other spin-off concepts to feel more self-contained — such as, perhaps, a Cry Havoc adaptation following Tom Reece during the Vietnam War.

Image via Prime VideoIn terms of Prime Video’s overall franchise, The Terminal List is just getting started. With Reacher getting the spin-off treatment and continuing to expand, it’s not surprising that Amazon would follow the same formula for one of its most successful thrillers. Not only is The Terminal List an effective binge (especially if you add Dark Wolf to the list), but the series continues to pull in new viewers while retaining its core fanbase.
It helps that, as Carr himself has expressed, the show is genuinely made for the fans of the books and similar genre-defining thrillers, rather than with the goal of finding a “new” audience that isn’t already interested in these types of shows. The good news is that the creatives behind the show are already thinking about its long-term future. As DiGilio puts it:
“When it comes to the flagship, we’re one to two seasons ahead all the time. And then, we’re constantly building the concepts for the spin-offs and waiting for the right time to take those in to Amazon.”

The Terminal List isn’t going anywhere any time soon. Apart from adapting Savage Son as a potential third season, as well as ideas for how Dark Wolf might continue, the creative team continues to come up with spin-off concepts and threads to weave into future seasons, with plans in motion all the way through a fifth season. If that’s not exciting for James Reece fans everywhere, we don’t know what is.
