Chris Pratt is back with another Navy SEAL-based bestseller adaptation in the first Way of the Warrior Kid trailer.
Based on Jocko Willink’s 2017 novel of the same name, the Apple TV film centers on Marc, a tween boy in middle school constantly bullied by his peers who turns to his Uncle Jake, a Navy SEAL staying with him and his mother after being injured in combat, for help, with Jake developing a special program to teach him SEAL courage and strength. Pratt leads the Way of the Warrior Kid cast as Uncle Jake alongside Holland‘s Jude Hill and Crystal Lake‘s Linda Cardellini.
Ahead of the film’s November 20 premiere, Apple TV has unveiled the official Way of the Warrior trailer. The footage introduces Jake as an action-seeking hero and Marc as a tormented young boy, with his bullies doing everything from throwing his bike off a highway bridge to violently confronting him at a carnival. The trailer then turns to showcasing some of the training Jake looks to impart on his nephew, as well as a glimpse of a harrowing event in which Marc himself gets to try and be a hero. Pratt’s turn in Way of the Warrior Kid marks a notable first for the producer/star in it being his first live-action film geared towards a family-friendly audience. He’s no stranger to the genre overall, but has primarily done voiceover work in the field, namely Illumination’s record-breaking Super Mario movies and Sony’s The Garfield Movie, both of which have new installments on the way. However, with live-action, he’s generally been focused on blockbuster or franchise filmmaking, including his hit Terminal List series at Prime Video.
Additionally, Way of the Warrior Kid marks Pratt’s first foray into working with Apple TV, becoming the latest to join the streamer’s star-studded Original Films library. Ever since Tom Hanks’ WWII thriller Greyhound became a critical and viewership hit, they’ve steadily ramped up their productions with bigger names and larger-scale titles, including Brad Pitt’s F1, which broke multiple box office records, Mark Wahlberg’s Family Plan series, which set various viewership records, and Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh’s Mayday.

Interestingly, the Way of the Warrior Kid trailer already points to a variety of changes being made for the film adaptation. Pratt’s Uncle Jake looks to take more of a tough-love approach to Marc’s early training, whereas the book showcased a sympathetic side due to his own experiences with bullying as a child. Moreover, the movie is expanding Jake’s reason for staying with his family over the summer, revealing an injury from a combat mission that he’s still having trouble processing.
One of the other notable changes apparent in Way of the Warrior Kid‘s trailer is a bus crash that Marc is aboard, in which he looks to be using some of the training from his Uncle Jake to help the others trapped inside. Given the underdog, feel-good core to the source novel, this could be one of many expansions to highlight just how much of an impact the pair make on each other by the end. With Willink also having four other novels in the Way of the Warrior Kid series, it will be interesting to see if Pratt’s film proves successful to launch a franchise of its own.
