The Kansas City Chiefs took a painful 28-24 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and a late special-teams misfire sits right at the center of the gridiron drama. With 2:36 remaining in the fourth quarter, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal attempt wide to the right. The errant boot gave Denver prime field position to march down and capture the late lead.

Butker’s leg has been surprisingly shaky lately; he is just 2-for-7 from 50-plus yards this season and has missed 16 field goals since the start of last season, the most of any kicker in the NFL during that span. Despite the costly error, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid immediately stepped up to defend his veteran kicker.

Reid insisted the missed kick was a split-second spatial adjustment rather than a total breakdown in mechanics. “I see why he went right,” Reid explained to reporters. “He just went a little too wide. They overloaded that side with all their bigs.” According to Reid, had Butker sent the ball on its standard trajectory, Denver’s heavy defensive front would have blocked the attempt entirely.

#Chiefs HC Andy Reid, defending K Harrison Butker, said his 54-yard FG went so wide right because, had he kicked it straight, it would have been blocked.

The late collapse wasted a solid performance from quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns. Mahomes connected with running back Emmett Johnson on an explosive 73-yard touchdown pass while also finding wide receiver Rashee Rice and tight end Noah Gray in the end zone. Denver quarterback Bo Nix led the comeback with 222 passing yards and two scores, capped by running back Jonah Coleman’s go-ahead touchdown.

Chiefs’ Andy Reid goes to bat

While notable free-agent names like former Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker wait for an opportunity, Reid is not pressing the panic button on his star specialist. Still, Kansas City needs Harrison Butker to regain his reliable form quickly as tight divisional battles heat up down the stretch.
