Chelsea Urged To Launch A Move For This Tottenham Hotspur Full-Back: Should Alonso Snap Him Up?

· · 2 min read

Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast with Jeff Stelling, Andy Townsend urged his former club Chelsea to launch a move for Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence. Townsend said,

“I don’t know what he would cost because of how well he did at the World Cup.

“Has that inflated his price tag unreasonably? I genuinely haven’t got a clue.

“If Cucurella is going to Real Madrid for over £60million, I would have thought Djed Spence at £40million, something around that figure, would be a decent acquisition.

“It wouldn’t do them (Chelsea) any harm to have someone who is still looking to improve as a player, who is all ears and wants to get better.

“He is now showing what he is capable of, so that wouldn’t be a bad piece of business.”

Spence’s Impressive Form In North London

Spence enjoyed a solid campaign at Tottenham recently as he managed to serve as an important member of their squad. The England international made 30 league appearances for Spurs last season but failed to score or create a goal for them.

The 26-year-old is currently among the most talented full-backs in the Premier League. Thus, the Blues would do well to lure him to Stamford Bridge in this transfer period.

His current deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will run out in the summer of 2029, which could make it difficult for the Blues to sign him on the cheap this off-season.

Should Chelsea Boss Xabi Alonso Snap Spence Up This Summer?

Spence is a good tackler of the ball and can scan the danger well to make some crucial interceptions for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive and can make some driving runs out in the wide areas.

The English talent is primarily a right-back but can also serve as a left-back if told to do so. However, Spence needs to add more goals and assists to his game if he wants to taste success at the highest level.

Spence would undoubtedly improve the quality of Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso’s defence. He has what it takes to challenge for regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge next season.

At 26, Spence has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a good fit for the Premier League club’s needs this summer. All in all, Alonso would be wise to listen to Townsend’s advice by snapping the Tottenham full-back up in this transfer period.
