Chelsea Must Not Hand Manchester City the Solution to Their Biggest Problem

There is one simple question Chelsea’s hierarchy should be asking themselves as speculation over Enzo Fernández’s future continues: why would they help Manchester City?

Not why City want him. That part is easy to understand.

Rodri’s departure has left a huge hole in City’s midfield, and Fernández is one of the few players in world football capable of helping fill it. The far more difficult question is why Chelsea would willingly strengthen a direct rival at a time when they are supposedly trying to close the gap at the top of the Premier League.

This Is Not a Normal Transfer

Had City approached Chelsea at the start of the summer, the discussion might have looked very different.

At that point, Rodri was still at the Etihad and any deal could have been viewed primarily through a financial lens. If Chelsea received a huge offer for a player who has impressed without entirely living up to his enormous transfer fee, there would at least have been a debate to be had.

City’s midfield now has an obvious weakness, and Fernández appears to be one of the club’s preferred solutions. That means this is no longer simply about Chelsea selling a player. It is about Chelsea potentially solving a major problem for one of their biggest competitors.

Manchester City Need Him More Than Chelsea Need the Money

The weekend provided a clear indication of City’s predicament.

Enzo Maresca experimented with Marc Guéhi in midfield, a move that looked more like an emergency measure than a long-term solution. Experienced midfielders were available, yet the new City manager still appeared unconvinced by his current options.

That should set alarm bells ringing at Stamford Bridge.

A sale would not just weaken Chelsea. It would significantly improve a City side that remains packed with elite attacking talent and title-winning experience. The gap between the clubs could widen overnight.

No transfer fee changes that reality.

Chelsea Cannot Ignore the Competitive Damage

Chelsea have spent years attempting to rebuild themselves as genuine title contenders.

If that remains the club’s objective, then strengthening City’s weakest position feels completely counterproductive. Fernández and Moisés Caicedo have developed into one of the strongest midfield pairings in the league and dismantling that partnership now would be a huge gamble.

Even if Chelsea successfully reinvested the money, there would be no guarantee the replacement could have the same impact.

Meanwhile, City would immediately benefit.

There Is Also the Maresca Factor

The political side of this potential deal should not be ignored.

Only weeks ago, Chelsea lost Maresca to Manchester City after the former manager was identified as Guardiola’s successor. Compensation was paid, agreements were reached and both parties moved on, but it would be understandable if Chelsea were not rushing to make life easier for their former coach.

Football clubs should not make decisions based on emotion alone.

But neither should they ignore the wider context.

The Smarter Move Is Keeping Fernández

Chelsea have their own issues to solve, particularly in goal, where the search for an upgrade on Robert Sánchez continues. Those are the sorts of changes that could bring the club closer to a title challenge.

Selling Fernández feels like the opposite.

City remain one of the biggest threats to Chelsea’s ambitions, even after Guardiola’s departure. Handing them the answer to their most obvious weakness would be a remarkable act of self-sabotage.

If Chelsea truly believe they are ready to compete for major honours again, the decision should be straightforward.

Keep Fernández, keep City guessing, and force a rival to find its solution elsewhere.
