The Boston Celtics might have reached a point of no return with Jaylen Brown.
Over the last few weeks, numerous reports have indicated the Celtics were reluctant to offer Brown in trade packages for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. The top NBA insiders, including ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, indicated Boston was hesitant due to fear of angering Brown and motivating him to request a trade even if a deal for Antetokounmpo fell through.
But the narrative changed Monday morning. During a “Get Up!” segment, Windhorst reported that the Celtics have offered Brown for Antetokounmpo, and that a deal could happen before the 2026 NBA Draft starts on Tuesday.
“I will tell you this: I was really skeptical that the Boston Celtics would go all in on this, and from what I understand, they have,” Windhorst said. “The Celtics and the Heat are the two teams aggressively going after Giannis; I would say they’re the finalists. And if Giannis is going to be traded in the next 24 hours, which I think has a good chance of happening, I think it’s either going to be to or Boston or Miami.
” … The Boston thing … they were very cautious about putting Jaylen Brown in an official, firm offer — I believe they have. Jaylen Brown is on the table, and Jaylen Brown could get traded for Giannis Antetokounmpo in the short-term future.”

At this point, it’s hard to envision Brown playing for the Celtics next season. Even if the Antetokounmpo trade talks fall apart, Boston could pivot and trade Brown elsewhere.
Thankfully, we probably won’t have to wait much longer to learn how this story ends.
