Celebration of life for legendary Georgia high school coach set at College Football Hall of Fame

A celebration of life for a Georgia high school football legend will take place this weekend.

William “Buck” Godfrey died on Aug. 1 at the age of 83. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame coach coached and taught at Southwest DeKalb High School from 1983 until 2012 and won a state title in 1995.

His family will hold a special memorial service at the College Football Hall of Fame Saturday starting at 5 p.m.You can click here to leave a memory of Godfreyahead of the ceremony.

Godfrey’s family will also announce details about the William Buck Godfrey Legacy Scholarship.

“Coach William ‘Buck’ Godfrey spent more than three decades at Southwest DeKalb High School as a head football coach, English teacher, and author. He led his teams to 273 victories and a state championship, while sending hundreds of student-athletes to college on scholarship. This fund carries his work forward by supporting students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” his family says.

Applications for the scholarship will open in March 2027.
